The price of a used car — badly used in most cases — ranged from $5 to $400 today at the police garage.
Happiest about his purchase at the semi-annual auction of unclaimed autos was William Krieger, 19, of 85 Woodridge Ave., Cheektowaga.
His bid of $41 bought him a 1951 Oldsmobile that “looks pretty good,” despite some dents, rust and a flat tire.
“I couldn’t have gone much higher,” he said. He and a friend, Howard Christ, 20, of 319 Langfield Dr., who was with him, have an “older car” they fixed up and figure they can do the same with this one, he explained.
Scrap steel dealers comprised most of the 90 persons who followed Police Administrator Daniel F. Hurley from car to car on which were crumpled fenders, twisted doors, broken windows and flat tires.
The 50 cars brought $1866.50. Bids on most of the wrecks ranged from $20 to $40.
