With an eye on the more than 37,000 household questionnaires received in the mail since April 1, the Buffalo District census office will begin a shift of emphasis tomorrow.
Training in transcribing the questionnaires left at every fourth household unit during the house-to-house canvass will start for about 250 members of the census-taking group, Russell L. Bailey, supervisor, said today.
Next week they will begin recording the questionnaire information on sheets for the electronic machines in Jeffersonville, Ind., that will interpret the census data. In cases where answers are not complete, transcribers will seek clarification by telephone calls to the persons who filled out the forms.
Mr. Bailey said the total number of questionnaires to be processed will be just over 50,000.
While this work is being done, the “clean-up stage” of field work will continue, with enumerators assigned to uncompleted areas.
It is hoped that by tomorrow the “clean-up stage” of canvassing will have no more than 6% or 8% of the population to cover.
