Ailing Man Goes to Aid of Driver in Live-Wire Trap

William P. Richardson of 30 Meriden St. left a sick bed today to save a life in a storm emergency.

“I have to go — there’s a man in that car,” he said as he pulled on his boots and rubber gloves after glancing out the window.

A falling branch minutes before had carried two live wires of a 110-volt power line into Meriden St. in front of Mr. Richardson’s home. The branch hit a passing car and the wires were draped across the car.

Mr. Richardson moved the wires and helped the driver, Edward Anna, 20, of 24 Norman St., to safety.

“I’m glad he knew enough to stay in the car,” the rescuer, an electrical trouble-shooter in the National Aniline plant, said.

Fifteen minutes later Mr. Richardson was back in bed, where he has been confined for five weeks with a stomach ailment.
