Couldn’t Anticipate Roof Leak, Hospital Superintendent Says

The roof over Meyer Memorial Hospital dental clinic was “carefully checked” when a new sound-proof ceiling was put in, Dr. L. Edgar Hummel, hospital superintendent, said today.

The new ceiling was damaged Friday by water leaking through the roof. The damage was observed by Gus Franczyk, Ninth Ward supervisor, who said there was “a stream pouring down behind a dentist who was trying to work on a woman patient.”

He said the Board of Supervisors appropriated $5000 for repairing hospital roofs in 1958 and the Hospital Board returned $1100.

Dr. Hummel said the leak could have been caused by men clearing leaves from the roof.

Mr. Franczyk was critical of the fact that the leak began in the morning but was not repaired until late afternoon.

Dr. Hummel said the head of the maintenance department reported a portion of the ceiling had to be removed and “it took some time to do the work.”
