N.Y. Trip to Show UB Students How Buyers Operate

Twelve University of Buffalo students will test the bustling practicality of buying in New York City’s wholesale markets Monday and Tuesday.

They will be participating in the annual field trip for Retailing Department seniors, sponsored since 1948 by five Buffalo department stores to augment classroom instruction.

Sears Roebuck & Co. is the host this year. The students will visit Sears’ central buying office and distribution office.

Each student will be accompanied by a Sears buyer on an actual purchasing trip to a wholesale market.

Companies underwriting the expense are Adam, Meldrum & Anderson Co., the William Hengerer Co., J. C. Penney Co., Sattler’s Department Store and Sears.

Meeting the vendors and seeing how the buying is done by a large store is “a priceless opportunity” for a student, Miss Jennie S. Graham, assistant professor in UB’s School of Business Administration, said today. She will accompany the students to New York City.

Expense money for the trip was given the students today by Charles W. Cox, group manager for Sears Roebuck & Co.

Making the trip will be Charles J. Burnano, Walter J. Clayback, John L. Detwiler, W. L. Janecek, Miss Patricia A. Kath, Vincent J. Murphy and Miss Ellen V. Ziolkо of Buffalo; William T. Daniels of Snyder; Daniel C. Vacco of North Collins; Donald S. Ness of Painted Post; Miss Sandra A. Fishel of Rochester and Meredith A. Hoffman of New York City.
