Salary Issue Stalls Henrich’s Approval as Pro

Democratic opposition to a proposed $1500 annual payment by the County to the Elma Meadows golf professional defeated the recommended appointment of John Henrich of 166 Findlay Ave., Town of Tonawanda, to the post.

The vote on the Parks Committee recommendation was strictly on party lines, with 26 in favor and 25 opposed. A majority of 28 is required for passage. Republican Supervisor Harry W. Vackel of the 16th Ward and two Democrats, Benedict T. Holtz of Cheektowaga and Eugene H. Duffy of the City of Tonawanda were absent.

Democrats concentrated their opposition on the contract stipulations that the professional shall be permitted to rent equipment, give golf lessons and operate a driving range at the course — retaining all income from these sources and receiving $1500 annually from the county as well.

Supervisor Gus Franczyk of the Ninth Ward pointed out that the professionals at the city’s courses pay the city for the right to operate.

The Republican viewpoint, given by Supervisor Randolph A. Mineo of the 19th Ward, was that Elma Meadows is a new undertaking and that adjustments can be made, if indicated, after a study of the first year’s operation.
